Understanding Bed Dimension Sizes

Modern mattresses are manufactured in an array of standard sizes. The standard bed dimensions correspond with sheets and other bedding sizes so that your bedding fits and looks right. Here are the sizes of mattresses available on the market today.

Children's, Twin and Twin XL Beds

Crib and toddler mattresses are 27 inches by 52 inches. Mattresses from baby cribs are sized to fit into toddler beds as a young child transitions out of the crib bed. Generally, when a child is two years old or 35 inches in height, it's time to move the kid into their own real bed.

A twin bed is a logical step up from a toddler bed for a young child. Standard twin mattresses are 38 inches wide by 75 inches long. However, some kids are super tall, and some twin beds are slept in by taller adults. In those cases, a mattress called a twin XL is required. Twin XL beds are 38 inches wide by 80 inches long for more foot room. You'll need a bed frame designed to hold a twin XL mattress to set up the bed.

Full and Queen Beds

Full-size mattresses are also labeled as double mattresses. A full-size bed is 53 inches in width by 75 inches in length. Full-size beds can accommodate two people, but they won't have a lot of space to move around. Some full beds are too short for teens and adults.

Queen-size mattresses are a step up from full-size beds for couples and singles. A queen-size mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. A queen-size mattress works well for couples with smaller bedrooms and for single people who love to have a lot of bed space to themselves.

King, California King, and Split King Beds

King size beds work best in bedrooms that have plenty of floor space. King-size beds are made for luxurious sleeping and can accommodate a couple with plenty of room to spare. A standard king-size mattress is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, so its surface is nearly square. The split-king mattress has the same dimensions as the standard king. However, there are two 38-inch by 80-inch mattresses pushed together on one box spring or frame to make the bed sleeping space. Couples who prefer their own beds but want to remain close choose split-king mattresses. The California king bed is the ultimate in big mattresses at a whopping 72 inches in width and 84 inches in length. California king mattresses are great for family sleeping and for very tall adults and teens.

Bedroom Floor Space

Your bedroom should measure 10 feet by 10 feet to accommodate a queen-size bed. A standard or California king-size bed works best in a bedroom that has at least 12 feet by 12 feet of available floor space.

Box Springs

Some modern platform beds don't require box springs. If your bed does require box springs, order a box spring with the same dimensions as your mattress so that you have proper support when you sleep.
